5 Interesting Reflexes Our Clinicians May Observe During Earwax Removal
At Simply Hearing, earwax removal is a safe and routine procedure. However, the ear is closely connected to several nerves that link to other parts of the body. Because of this, some people may experience small reflex reactions during the process. These responses are normal and usually last only a few seconds.
Here are five interesting reflexes our Simply Hearing clinicians sometimes observe during earwax removal.
1. Brief Dizziness
Occasionally, a person may feel slightly dizzy during ear cleaning. This happens because the ear also contains the body’s balance system. Changes in temperature in the ear canal can briefly stimulate this system, known as the Caloric Effect. The sensation usually settles quickly once the procedure pauses.
2. Sudden Cough
Some patients may suddenly feel the urge to cough during earwax removal. This occurs because a small nerve in the ear canal connects to the throat through the Vagus Nerve. When this area is stimulated, it can trigger a natural response called Arnold’s Reflex.
3. Tickling Sensation in the Throat
Because of the same nerve connection, some people notice a light tickling feeling in their throat while the ear canal is being cleaned. This feeling usually disappears immediately once the ear is no longer being stimulated.
4. Sensitive or Tender Ear
If earwax is very hard or has been present for a long time, the ear canal may be a little sensitive during removal. Our clinicians work gently and carefully to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.
5. Watery Eyes
In rare cases, stimulation of nerves around the ear may cause the eyes to water slightly. This is another temporary reflex and settles quickly once the procedure is finished.
The Good News
These reflexes are completely normal and short-lived. Our experienced clinicians at Simply Hearing are trained to recognise these responses and ensure your earwax removal is safe, comfortable, and effective.
If you’re experiencing blocked ears, reduced hearing, or discomfort, professional earwax removal can help restore clear hearing and keep your ears healthy.
