When to have your child's hearing checked

Children often don’t realise they can’t hear well, so the signs usually show up in everyday life. Consider a hearing test if your child:

  • often says “what?” or asks for things to be repeated
  • turns the TV or tablet up loud
  • doesn’t respond when called from another room
  • has unclear speech or speech that is behind other children their age
  • struggles to follow instructions in the classroom, or a teacher has raised a concern
  • has had repeated ear infections, or blocked or sore ears

A hearing test is also worth booking before starting school, or if you simply want peace of mind.

What happens at a children's hearing test

We keep the appointment relaxed and use age-appropriate listening activities, so the test feels more like a game than an exam. The assessment can include:

  • Ear examination (otoscopy) to check the ear canal and eardrum, including for wax
  • Tympanometry, a quick, gentle check of how the eardrum moves, which helps detect fluid behind the eardrum or middle ear problems
  • Pure tone audiometry to find the softest sounds your child can hear at different pitches
  • Speech testing to see how well your child hears and understands words

Afterwards we explain the results in plain language and talk you through any next steps, including when a referral to your GP or an ENT specialist is recommended.

Ear wax removal for children aged 8 and over

Ear wax is normal and usually clears on its own, but sometimes it builds up and blocks the ear. Signs include muffled hearing, a blocked or full feeling, itching or discomfort.

For children aged 8 and over we offer microsuction ear wax removal. It is dry and gentle, with no water syringing, and is done under magnification so we can see exactly what we are doing. Please don’t use cotton buds to clean your child’s ears, as they push wax further in.
